Landon felt Macie’s smile against his skin. Her hand moving over his back sent heat shooting throughout his body. He was hyperaware of every move she made. He’d stepped into the shower to comfort her and now his body ached to consume her. Between them, he had grown hard with desire. If their embrace didn’t end soon he would be asking for more than she might be willing to give.

Macie looked at him with wide eyes. “You were afraid too? It didn’t show.”

It might not have shown, but he’d felt it all the way to his bones. He had no wish to repeat any of it, especially the part where Macie had hung by a rope.

“That doesn’t mean I wasn’t worried.” He cupped her cheek and lowered his mouth to hers. She tasted so sweet. All he intended to do was reassure himself that she was there, safe and sound. Yet her lips were plump, damp from the water and salty from her tears. She felt like heaven. He kept the kiss gentle, comforting, despite his desire to do more and his control that had become razor thin.

It felt good to be alive. Macie made him feel that way.

She moaned, and her arms came up around his neck as her perfect velvety smooth body leaned into his.

Landon ran a hand down the length of her damp back, stopping himself just short of going too far out of bounds. This wasn’t, shouldn’t be, about sex but about comfort. But his body begged for the former. Regardless of the fact that he held a naked Macie—which he’d dreamed of doing every night since arriving on Saipan—he couldn’t, wouldn’t, take advantage of her. If the circumstances were different, would she be letting him hold her like this?

They had to stop now. This wasn’t the time or the place. He wouldn’t take the chance that she might resent him or regret being with him.

Stepping away from her and breaking the kiss, he turned her and pulled the shower curtain back. With his palm on her lower back, he gave her a gentle push. “Dry off and get dressed. I put some clean scrubs on the counter.”

She stepped out, and he firmly drew the curtain between them, grateful the water had cooled. It saved him from having to turn it to cold.

Macie had left by the time he came out of the bathroom. He was glad, since he had no idea what her reaction would be after she’d had time to think about those moments in the shower. Putting his feet back into his wet shoes, he headed to where he’d last seen their patient.

On arriving, he saw Macie standing at the unit desk holding the phone. “We need the plane here ASAP.”

He stopped beside her. Macie glanced up then away as if she didn’t want to make eye contact. Was she embarrassed by her actions in the shower? He was hoping she would want to repeat them when her mind had cleared. His body still begged for her to do so.
